GSP not opening up

I just bought some coral for the first time and i have perfect nitrates, phosphate, etc. The green star polyp has been in the water for about a week now and being new to coral i was wondering if they are dying or if they are just taking time to open up. I am running tap water as of now but did just buy rodi which is on the way as we speak so im sure that could be the problem. but i am worried because it seems that some algae is growing on them. I was wondering with coral if i had to do anything special or if it will just take some time for them to get used to the tank. Any help would be awesome and this seems to be the thread to ask. I am also wondering what the best light for coral would be. I have a cheap 2 bulb T5 65 watt 6700k that i got from a friend so i am looking to upgrade. Thanks!!

nitrates and phosphate are not a big issue here, i have never test any of the two in a year, pay attention to alk and calc, does would make a big different if they open or not, try to remove the algae from it as well

i did make a big beginner mistake by adding saltwater to my evaporated water, so my salinity was extremely high for a long time, i figured this out a few days before i added the coral so im not sure if that has anythign to do with it but salinity is good now.

I just added a GSP to a nano reef. Just have a couple other soft corals and and a watchman that all look good. Salinity 1.022, PH 8.1, No amonia or nitrite, Nitrate aprox 20 to 30. How long should it take before they open up after a move? Not dosing, but a few polyps and a small kenyan tree are only other inhabitants and weekly water change with I/O so assume that is adding elements.

I have so many GSP they are over running my tank. I wish there was an easier way to remove them from rocks without tearing them into little pieces. I always seem to lose a few pieces then a couple months later I have a new colony somewhere. My tank started out with 1 GSP frag and maybe one additional one. 3 years later this is what it looks like

FWIW the GSP are now doing their thing, just took about half a day. Hopefully I have the problem with them over running my tank. Good looking tank Gandolfe.

Im pretty sure they are dead now, im not sure what happened, i did have a cyno bacteria outbreak but i got rid of that. Im a little nervous to try more coral if these guys didn't make it.

Hawkeyebeek,

I don't know if it is too late, but have you checked all your parameters. The issue with high salinity is that it tends to also bring up your acidity in the water and/or ALK, which these guys (GSP) tend to hate. I don't know that it is 100% dead, but I would recommend doing several water changes of about 10% to 15% to bring all parameters to where they should be and measure, measure, measure.

There are things we should know about your tank before anyone can provide proper feedback. This coral is kind of hard to kill, but without knowing where everything is in your tank, I don't know what other recommendations to make.

Can you provide levels for:
  • ALK
  • PH
  • Ammonia
  • Calcium
  • Nitrite
  • Nitrate

Did you forget to treat your tap water in a recent water change? I can't think of anything else really since your lighting seems sufficient and you say your parameters are ok.
