Is there anyway to stop the spread of star polyps ? They look neat in a little clump but the clump is getting BIG !

I let mine take over a lot of the tank. I draw the line though when they get close to SPS or they bridge to a rock I don't want them on. Still, they are easy to lose control of when your tank is in good shape to grow SPS usually the GSP goes nuts. I also have WSP, same story, maybe even worse.

I use two tools you can get at www.petsolutions.com or similar. One is a 10" pair of stainless steel tweezers I use to scrape the rock and peel up the edge of the mat where possible. The other is a pair of stainless scissors that I used to chop off the heads of the polyps that encroach where I dont want them. Really, I just shred them with no consideration for their health because the grow back like crazy.

Although pretty, GSP is like a weed in most tanks. I keep a small patch on an isolated rock in the sandbed and prevent it from getting to the main rock formations b/c its a pain to remove. Like mentioned above, fragging can be done with scissors or pieces can be torn by hand.

If it's on the rock and you want to kill it, you can use a kalk paste like you would with aptasia. Its resilient so multiple treatments are likely necessary.

Hi,

I had at one time star polyps all over my tank. they will grow up corals and kill them. I now keep mine on a rock on the sandbed. When they grow out I trim them off with scissors and glue them to a new rock. Frag time!!!

i dont mind it growing all over the place, it really fills in the holes and makes the tank look more natural. I don't like the look of purple rock with isolated lumps of SPS, although it is a pain to control really its not too bad.
