Gyre fail

Noticed a new fun feature on my Gyre today. Installed around November 10th, 2014. Will see what support says. The second one looks fine from what I could see without taking it out.

Well "expensive" cheap Chinese stuff! Just a step above Jebao maybe :) Already had Tunzes before, maybe will try Vortechs next.

Definitely a known issue. I know several people that have opened a ticket with CV and received new pumps that resolve the issue.

Do you know if this was only something that happened with initial run of pumps or any version will have that happen eventually?

Sucks to hear that happened Mike.

I learned my lesson buying first generation anything a while back.

I was one of the first to buy the SRO skimmers and got stuck for a $150 impeller that was a known defect. I'll let other reefers break in new equipment.

I'm a big fan of Vortech, used can be had fairly inexpensively

Yes, I have heard it only being a problem with the initial run of hardware. I haven't heard of any widespread issue from any of the replacements.

Yes. It was a known issue in the first batches made. Carlos at Coralvue was extremely helpful and sent me a new one within 2 days. Didn't need to return anything.

You will need a photo of the bar code and copy of your receipt.

Since we are on the subject of pumps here....I pulled a Koralia out of storage today to add to my tank and noticed this. Peeps...Check your power heads!...:)

Thanks for posting this! I love my gyre. In fact just today installed a second. They have changed the wire out. As well as the mount. Anyway read this and took a look at my old one that I bought DEC of last year. Cabling is coming apart. I'm glad I found out before my warranty was up! Just submitted a ticket. They should really be contacting anyone with a pump that has this cheap cabling and letting them know it is not acceptable for use in saltwater environments.

At 36 VDC there is really not a safety issue. But I do agree that there should be a recall. If they know this is happening it seems like they are just hoping for people to not notice and let their warranty period run out. Dishonest business practice IMO.

I would be more concerned with that tripping a breaker and leaving my tank offline until I can get home.

But anyways, my tickets was answered and should have new motor body on Tuesday. I've taken out the other Gyre to clean the other day (mainly to inspect the cable). I can't say that it looks any different in quality, but it was not cracked, at least not yet. I did get that Gyre later and it came with a new style rubber mount, so maybe it is new cable type as well.

On a side note, cleaning them did help flow quite a lot. Main dirty parts were the grill with coraline and perhaps some sort of fuzz on the propellers or whatever they are called. Neither seemed very out of hand, but I guess even a little is enough to reduce flow by what seems like 20-40%. Had main one up to 80% before, now even at 50% it seems a bit too strong.

Still looking at those WAV powerheads lol. From the looks of them it seems to me that they are some sort of modified version of Sicce XStreams. Very similar design outside of the mount and Neptune logo embedded into the front grill design. In comparison to Sicce ones at $250, WAV are cheaper as well. perhaps simply due to the lack of the controller parts.

Too strong? That is blasphemous. :)

Got the new motor block in the mail today. So all fixed up, at least for now heh

Still thinking about adding pair of WAVs, would've ordered today, but BRS is out of stock on them, so more time to think!
