Gyre in a Peninsula, What do I need to know?

This is going to be my 3rd reef in 25 years, I have been at this a wile. I started about a month ago with a biocube 29 and happened into a 135 galon tank last week see my build thread.

As it turns out, in our home, a peninsula layout really fits the best and I love the idea of seeing both sides of the aquarium.

My problem is that the end of the peninsula is one of the first things you see when you walk in our front door but I am a SPS flow freak (useing a tunze 6055 full power in my BC29) and I don't want a powerhead to be the first thing you see when you walk into my house.

People keep commenting: "Get a gyre; problem solved". I have very little idea what a gyre is other than lots of people talk about having one and it looks a little like a double ended...well, just a long black tube.

So, what should I look for in a gyre? Should I have it APEX controllable? I do like controllable. Will it be enough flow? Will I need supplemental flow? How long do they last? Why is it better than a wavebox?

I have a very tight budget on this project which means that I can't afford to do much testing of cheep solutions that end up needing to be replaced.
