Gyre XF250 for 60g

Hello all,

My wife and I have been looking to upgrade the flow in our 60g rimless for the last year or so. We love our Maxspect Razor and The Gyres have really caught our eye. I have read plenty of reviews of the original and I am under the impression that they have remedied some of the durability issues with the second generation. Coupled with the new controller, I think we are going to pull the trigger.

My question is which one should I look at getting. The specs on the 230 would seem to fit our set up perfectly but I always like exercising overkill with things like this. On paper the 250 seems to be overkill but when spending this kind of money I would rather chip off an extra $50 and be sure, as there is always a potential upgrade looming.

Would there be any downside to using the bigger size at a lower setting? Wouldn't this actually put less strain on the pump, and possibly prolong life?

Thanks!

Im the same as you. Bigger is better. You can always set it to the lowest setting but if you buy a smaller version you wont be able to increase the flow. I have the xf 130 on a 12"x12" cube and its bare bottom and i keep it at the third bar, whoch is enough. Make sure you get the rugged propeller. The old version breaks esily

I have been running a 150 on my 90g (48"x18"x24") for several months, only had it set to 40% and plenty of flow. Have just splashed out on a new controller and a 250 to vary the flow even more.

Something to bare in mind I also ran an XF130 at around 60-70% originally but I found it to be quite noisy when compared to the using a 150 at an equivalent 30-40% so I would highly recommend going for the 250
