Hi Dean,
Couple of things which might help that I did when I had a problem with hair algae.

1. Cut down on feedings. I feed every one day.
2. My lights run 11-11. VHO's on 2 hours before and 2 hours after haldies which run 1-9.
3. Make sure you have a good skimmer (mine is ASM G2)
4. Get some emerald crabs (I have 5 ot 6).
5. Make sure you have good circulation. I have 3 Maxijet 1200's and a sump which has a berlin sock in it.
6. Make sure you're using RO water.

Good luck.

Carrie

i feed every other day just the yellow tail damsel needs anything
I could cut my lighting down I go 12 and 12
my skimmer could be upgraded but not right now
I keep putting emeralds in but only one has survived my pistol shrimps attacks( his name is big green)-shrimps is Jack
for circ I have a rio and 2 reg powerheads plus the circ from the sump
and yes I'm using ro but the quality of it is questionable
have also filter bag w/ some sort of algae banning substance-phos guard maybe

yeah I have that too orgot to mention/ I also have red hermits and other colors/turbos/nas/ and a sea cuke

Soooo many thing that could be causing those problems. How old is your sand if you have any? Does your take get sun light from the out side? You might want to try buying some RO water from some where else like Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, or where ever. I had a nice RO/DI unit and had problems with hair alge untill I moved to Cheektowaga from UB north campus and my take really cleared up.

not too old of sand

-am thinking of getting a new ro/di

problems have been worse since moving in new home

no sun light - I blocked it out so my neighbors don't think I;m growing some thing I shouldn't! lol!
thx for the help

Check your Phospates. If they are detectable you need to run some sort of phosphate remover. also If you can run a refugium with Micro algea it will help cut down on nutrients that feed hair algea

I have a bag w/ phos remover in the sump w/ chaeto ( a fair amount)- I need to change it out
I noticed that some of the rock is cleaned up very nice- maybe I need more red legs
