the mushroom ( if it is, maybe your GF could take a better pick now? try shutting the pumps off when you do it ), regardless of whether or not it can sting the clam it will reproduced and start to spread on the shell. in time it can / will extend past the mantle and my begin blocking light from the clam. it would be best to remove the shroom by taking a razor blade and cutting close to the shell. take some extra time and try to scrap off as much genetic material as you can so they don't return. if you want you can propagate the shroom and start a little colony in a location of your choosing.
