hair algea

Take the plug out of the water, take a syringe with 3% h202 and apply on the algae, the h202 wont harm the polyps. I let it set for 2 min out of the water then rinse really well with fresh RO fresh and put them back in the tank. Gone next day garrenteed.

This turned my zoas into bubble wrap. I tried this earlier today, and as I was walking the zoa rock back to the tank, I heard a popping sound and looked down to see some of my zoas full of air bubbles, one so bad that it exploded. Obviously the h2o2 made its way into some of the polyps and filled them with gas. I am hoping they survive it. Neither of us are too thrilled.

It indeed harmed the polyps huh?

Normally we dip them in a solution of H2O2 with water from the tank or fresh water.
I would think a 1/4 to 1/2 of H2O2 per diluted solution would be more than enough.
The time would be between 3 to 5 minutes, I would say.

Good luck!

I got a tiny.. 4 or 5 polyp frag of zoas from my LFS as one of the first corals in my nano.. It was a bit messy with some hair algae growing between the polyps... and some general filmy coating...

After some research.. I gave it a 5 min dip in about 30% Hydrogen Peroxide 70% tank water, and placed it back in the tank...

That was 2 days ago..

It LOOKS much cleaner and healthier,, and has started to open again.. albeit.. slowly... one or two polyps at a time...

It's a bit premature to call it a success... but it certainly SEEMS to have helped...

Yes.. I did see some bubbles within the flesh of the frag.. but that seems to have dissipated.

Thats my experience with h2o2 dip..

will this work on any rock with hair algea or do the zoo's release something to the mix.

my presently fighting hair algea (pump on my skimmer died and didn't know it)

I don't think the zoas release anything to the mix at all.
You could use on the rocks but I wouldn't because it will kill bacteria and other inverts on it. Not worthy.
I believe some people already did with small rocks, but not the whole system.
On frags is different because normally there is the zoa poly (or colony) and the plug.

I treated my tank for 2 weeks to get rid of dino's and it cleaned up alot of other algea patches as well. Currently adding 4 ml per day (65 gal) and seeing its affects on algea. I have read a few articles on its wider application as an oxidizer of residual organics

That's very interesting!
I would like to take a look at those articles.
Do you have a link, please?
Thanks in advance!

an update on my previous post: all the polyps are back to being open. There is still a bubble blister on the side of the polyp that had the most damage, but it decreases in size by the day. Hair algae isn't exactly gone either, though.

Perhaps the algae is there but it's dead?
Good to hear the polyps are healing...

FWIW.... Using the 30/70 H202 to Tank water dip that I used.. ALL hair algae and slimyness completely disappeared.. and within 4 days my frag looked totally clean, healthy.. and was opening normally...

When I 'rescued' this little guy from my LFS it was darn near surrounded by hair algae that was nearly as tall as it was.. and looked a bit slimy... but I could see some vibrant orange tips just struggling to survive... (shoulda took a pic)

After the dip, It clammed up for 2 days.. but eventually opened up..

and 2 days later...
