Hairy mushrooms taking over my tank!

I have hairy mushrooms in my reef and they are taking over the tank like no body's business.

Taking out the rocks and chipping them off would be a huge pita...is ther another way to get rid of them?

i know its not aptasia but have you tried injecting them with joes juice,a kalkwassermix, or even lemon juice. give it a try it might work.

take a razor blade to the base of um and bring um to reef a palooza get payed for ur time theyll go faster if attached to whatever u have laying around for rubble

They are just as bad as Gordons mushrooms. Give them some MH and attack of the clones man!!!

i have those.. hahah i paid for them too but they are real pretty green...

wait until dark.. they close up and then cut them off... that should work...

or bring to rock to RAP and sell the rock....

I have those with a blue tint. I payed for them also, they are growing really large, but no clones. which i guess is a good thing bc my 24g is small.

Golan, I'd be careful injecting joe's juice. Those hairy mushrooms are pretty big and you have lots of them. Imaging all that organic tissue dissolving in your tank and you frantically siphoning it out to prevent a big cycle. I can't see another method if you complete removal besides the pita method you already mentioned

how about switching rock with another reefer? Unless, they are all over the place....

I started with a single hairy mushroom (just like the ones in the pic above) a little over a year ago. The thing has split into about 10 since then. You dont need MH to get them to grow all crazy, either. I have mine at the bottom of a 20 high under 80 watts of PCs.
I'd probably just suggest getting a powerhead right on them and blast em until they release from the rock. Then you can just pick them up without the mess.

Unfortunately, the only way you can get rid of them is to either swap out your rock or chip them off. If you use a chisel, you can break off thin slices off the surface of your rock with the mushrooms attached. Been there, done that, not fun. Good luck.

wanna sell some hairy shrooms? I live 2.5 hours away and priority shipping would only take a day to get here. I am interested in buying hairy shrooms for my girlfriend. she has asked me to buy her some. let me know. I will pay pretty fair if you have plenty of them.

i cut mine off as close to the rock as possible, then smeared kalk paste over any leftover pieces left on the rock, you may have to do the kalk more than once as they seem to grow back from any leftovers. AND THEY REALLY STINK!

thank you everyone...i think i will try the powerhead method and see if that really works....i hope it will really release itself from the rock and i wonder how long that would take.

If the above doesnt work, i will try the razor blade method.

if you would like to get some off your hands... i would love to help you clean the tank fully and cut them out of the rocks if i can keep a small one that you might want to discard for my display tank... please PM me if interested... i will drive to you NP... thanks

It will probably take forever for the mushrooms to detach with a powerhead...Id chisel them off the rocks and take them with you to RAP. Sell them for like $5 a piece and they will go like hot cakes
