Half a head Duncan how long will it take to recover?

I got one duncan head from a friend. But the head is broken into two parts. They are still together but don't open up fully, I was wondering how long will it take for it to recover? and is there anything I can do to help it recover faster?

If the skeleton is ripped and the polyp are still together I would cut the polyp with a razor blade. They are very resilient corals and you will have 2 heads at least in a month or two.

speaking from experience> I got a head and a half of duncan and the half ended up melting away while the other one grows larger without feeding under power compacts.

Ya, I wouldn't risk cutting it and ending up with nothing. I have saved frogspawn and hammer heads that cracked like that by putting a small amount of super glue gel between the skeletal base of the halves, sticking them together, then gluing the frag to a frag disk/plug. Just try not to get any of the glue on the flesh if you can help it.

Second that, try to create a patch of superglue to hold the damaged areas together. You don't want to risk tearing/bruising the inner tissue, the polyp will eventually heal and grow out =)

I had the same thing happen when I fragged some of my duncans. A 3 head frag had 1 head that was broken at the skeleton and the flesh was still in tact. I was going to cut it but I decided against it. I glued it "together" as much as possible to a rock however it would only half-open all of the time and after a couple of weeks the half that was hanging off from the rest of the polyps started sloughing off. Based off of my experience I would cut it and save time. If you don't feel safe doing this don't do it, however I have found my duncans to be super hardy and virtually indestructible.

On a (somewhat) side note, duncans slime like crazy when out of the water and they are tough to glue.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Yeah my friend fragged it and glued it to a disk. So I can't pick it off. Half of it is still open but the skeleton is cracked in half. And I've had this for awhile to like 2 weeks already and it hasn't fully opened. I don't know where to go from here. Should I split the thing or leave it alone?

True dat :D...My first duncan was exactly the way you discribe your frag. I did what jendub just mentioned and now I have 10 heads. So be patient and keep your tank in check and it will heal itself.

Hmm when I first got the duncan, I didn't see the split in the skeleton. but when it fell off the disk thats when I noticed it was split. So I just reglued it. And only half of its head comes out. I can never see the big flower kind of head. Any idea how long it took yours to recover? I put mine in a low flow area.

update:
I moved the duncan down from the top and put it in the corner of my tank. And it looks like the sweeper tips are coming back with the pointy looking shape. But I am curious how long does it take for a damaged duncan to recover?

Has anyone ever had one fully recover and how long has it taken? I think I have had this duncan for a few months.
