They won't stir your sand bed. They only go into the sand to hide or sleep. If you want to stir it up, just vacuum it when you do water changes. You'll lose some fine particles of sand but not a bunch. They don't need 4" of sand, an inch or two will suffice. Mine is content with his less than 2 inch sand bed.
