Halides for 55gal tank

Hello clam keepers,
I am planning out a new system and would really like to keep clams. The tank is a 55gallon tank, 17" deep (with sandbed.)

Is 2X10k 175w halides good lighting for clams?

How deep could I place them (up to 17"?)

The difference in cost between 250 watt and 175 isn't much at all so I'd opt for the additional intensity (if you haven't yet purchased your lighting). You could certainly keep clams under the 175's. The higher up on the rockwork (maximas and croceas) the better. I've have a crocea and maxima about 10 inches beneath my 250 watt hqi lamps.
