I picked some of this up today at my LFS. After I bought it I was told it would not do well with Chaeto, and may get overun by the chaeto in my refugium.
I have it in my display tank for now. Will having it in the display tank be ok?
I'm not really at ease with putting macros in the main tank, but since halimeda grows consederably slower as compared with chaeto, I guess it should be fine.
Halimeda can be a fast growing macro, and place a high demand on calcium and alk. Also once it has established roots into a substrate it can be a PITA to get rid of if you ever decide it needs to go. It is however a really pretty macro and can be controlled through regular pruning quite easily.
I would only use this in the main tank. It does not export nutrients and would be pointless to have in a refuge. Since it is calcium based it decomposes into reef sand. Treat it like a coral.
It's easy to prune but yes-- it does grow back once it gets a good hold into rockwork.
