halimeda - cottony growths?

Over the past few months ive noticed cottony growths/patches in the halimeda - which is growing heavily and happilyin my tank w/ the cotton? and when i remove it.. no difference ...
anyone have an idea what this may pertain to?
it is almost like spun cotton or a sticky spider's web w/in the "branches" of my halimeda incrassata (sp?)

any ideas would be appreciated ..
nothing to worry about i'd suspect, but i am curious as to what it may "mean" ;-)

I notice 'cottony' webs around the bases of some of the Halimeda where they grow on rock and assumed it to be a sort of root... Not sure if were talking about the same cotton tough.
