My tank has been set up for about 4 years. I havent added any live rock for about 2 years. About two years ago I got some metal halide lighting, 2 250 watt 10,000k. Anyway, a few months ago, I noticed a small start of halemeda had sprouted up on one of my rocks. I dont dose calcium (not since a kalk accident killed all my sps) and am very neglectiful when it comes to water changes. Well it seems as though I have a perfect environment for growing halimeda. In the past three months I have had to remove about 3 or four ziplock baggies full. and its not just one pland either, it has begun to sprout up on several rocks. I have transplanted some to another tank and though it got munched by some tangs, has also begun to sprout new plants.
I always thought that this stuff was hard to grow and required calcium supplement to thrive. Mine seems to be breaking all the rules. The only thing that I can think of is that the nutrient levels in my tank are providing it with lots of fertilizer. (The halimeda showed up at the same time as my hair algae problem so I really think its nutrient related.)
What are other peoples experiences with this plant? I really enjoy it, but im afraid if I start dosing calcium again, it will take off and smother all other life in the tank.
