i purchased one of these over the weekend and received it from fed ex today. There was a lot of "slime" on it and there was a distinct smell. Is this normal after shipping? This is my first order that was shipped to me.

thanks in advance for your helpl.

The slime is normal, but I can't speak to the smell. (The smell may have been coming from the water...having been slimmed so to speak). How's it doing now? Has it opened up at all yet?

I wouldn't worry about it yet at all. It may take a day or so to open up. They like moderate flow. I've had one for about a year and a half and he closes up tight for a while almost every day. It needs a bit of time to adjust to your tank and lights. I'll bet he opens before the end of the day tomorrow if your water quality is in check.

This is what I have after 2 days. Is this a hammer coral?

Thats a hammer coral skeleton :(

Its completely dead... do they have an arrive alive policy? I would contact the vendor ASAP.

Yup, that's dead ... just the skeleten. It looks like my bubble coral that died last week. My clownfish was hosting it and finally killed it off :(

Can't believe that an online retailer sent you that. It went out dead! Call and tell them they sent you a hammer skeleton.

It probably got brown jelly disease almost as soon as you put it in your tank. I'm only batting 3 for 5 on euphyllia (hammer, torch, frogspawn) surviving after shipping. Brown jelly will almost always happen on these guys if they arrive damaged. If the hammer was as slimed as you said when you removed it from the package it was probably damaged. The ones that have survived were not slimy at all in my experience. If you can, I'd buy euphyllia corals from local deals because they don't always do great in shipping.

brown jelly disease?

that coral suffered too much, it was a goner when it was probably shipped in the container improperly or was already suffering in the tank before shipping.

it only a few days or even a couple of days for it to be a skeleton. and if you had any critters or fish, they probably finished of the dead pieces pick off the skeleton pretty fast.

Nope you don't have to worry about that hammer. I purchased lots of stuff off the internet and I can't believe they sent you this. This was IMO,sent to you dead..Let us know if they make it right...

I agree. I've ordered a lot of corals online and never had an experience like that. My worste case is a brain coral that died 2 weeks after shipping. But when it arrived it looked good. It took 5 days for it to look like the one in your photo.
I would call them and set em straight!!

hopefully they correct their mistake. Was this a reputable company? i dont necessarily want the name but rather if it is one of the larger online retailers.

It was saltwaterfish.com. I sent an email to them this afternoon with the photos but have not seen a reply. I purchased 2 fish and another coral that are fine.

I think it is only fair to make this post. Saltwaterfish.com contacted me twice by email in reguards to the hammer coral being dead. Their policy was a refund if notified within 2 hrs but mine was 3 days later. They apologized for the incident and even offered to extend the refund if I would like. They emailed me 2 days later to make sure I received the credit (I did). So, even though I do not have a hammer at this time, saltwaterfish.com backed their product well. Thanks.

thats good customer service:thumbsup:

I ordered 3 corals online and 2/3 were dead by the time I put them in the tank!!! It was friggin ridiculous!!! But, I got a refund for the 2/3 plus a refund of shipping, so I basically paid for 1 coral and free shipping!!!! Worked in my benefit. If the corals are dead or near dead when you get them, contact the company immediately!!! They'll usually work with ya!!!
