anyone use a hana checker when treating fish with copper? or do people wing it?

I wouldn't wing it. Depending on which brand you are using, you'll want a kit that monitors it accurately. For example, cupermine suggests Seachems multi copper test kit.

Copper is deadly to all aquarium inhabitants, including tour fish, so make sure you know the therapeutic level and maintain it.

I am not sure I would wing it cause that kinda means there is not an accurate basis for measurement.

I use EXACTLY the dose suggested by the manufacture, in the frequency they say and I maintain this level throughout the medication period, likely less than 3 weeks for Ick. It's usually in drops so this is rather easy to apply.

If I follow the directions to the tee, I have never had a problem, so to me that's not a wing it.

Definitely test for copper! Hanna checker has been rated one of the best test kits to use for copper. It makes reading the concentration much easier since it's digital so you are not reading a color chart and guessing. You will need the high range one.
Copper is poision. It needs to be constant at the right concentration to kill the parasite and not the fish. Too low of a concentration and it will not be effective. Too high and you will risk kill all your fish.
