Hand cleaning?

I always wear surgical gloves when I put my hands in the tank. I use the "one size fits all" gloves when I'm feeding, but heavier, tighter gloves with a rubber band at the wrist if I'm moving rock or corals around or vacuuming the sand. Part of the reason is that my hands usually have detergent residue or hand lotion on them. The other reason is that bacteria from the tank can sneak into a hangnail or cut.

i wear thick rubber gloves when fragging or handling live rocks.. i know of a reefer who used his bare hand and got cut by a sharp live rocks which happens to have some palytoxic and his hand was swollen for quite some time.

No joke on this - I had a infection in the past couple of weeks that started with a small cut on my thumb. Remember thinking as my hand went into the tank - wonder if this will get infected - it did! May try gloves going forward.

I've been considering gloves..

I usually wash my hands well with soap up to or near my elbows, then rinse really well to get as much residue off as possible, then dry them really well.. never had any problems..

When I'm about to stick my hands in my tank (which I try to avoid doing), I scrub them in the sink under tap water. Just rubbing my hands together, trying to get any soap residue off of them. I like the Eheim plant tongs I just got in the mail.

Go to harbor freight and buy the pvc gloves for 5.99. Same thing as the coralife ones that they sell for 25-40.

they are thick so you lose dexterity but they work for moving frags, rocks, cleaning the inside glass, etc.

I saw an interesting post that there is a person who will be selling reef-safe soap. It's called reef suds. FYI in case anyone is interested.

I have never washed my hands before I put them in my tank, unless I had something on them before hand (no pun intended). Only worried about washing them good after the are out of the tank.

I never used to wear gloves and I would wash hands only if they were still dirty. After my fiancé and I were fragging zoas, her hand got HUGE and swollen and we had to take her to the clinic. I wear gloves now :)
