handicapped fish?

I guess this is not really a disease question, but I didn't know where else to put it. If a fish permanently loses the back part of it's dorsal fin including a bit of the flesh from it's back as well, can the fish eventually "relearn" how to balance itself? I have a fish that was injured in this way and it's wound is healing nicely, but it has trouble staying upright when resting and doesn't swim especially well. It's only been a few days and it's balance has somewhat improved, but it still flops over to the side unless it is moving forward or leaning on something. Has anyone had experience with this type of injury? Here is what it looked like a few days ago. The wound itself looks much better now.
