Hang on back refugium or filter?

Something like an aqua clear 50 with an inTank media basket running floss, and chemi pure would be my choice.

inside a 20 gal tank. The flow rate of the aqua would kick up all my substrate

I think not, and adds good surface agitation. Any LFS should have something similar for you to see in action. Also, with the floss and media bags in, the flow is really reduced. Without overflows, the surface scum on a reef tank is annoying, this will solve that. JMO

Im kinda leaning towards a refugium for this tank but im not quite sure how it would work since its not drilled. Im thinking id need 2 pumps, in order to make it work effectively.

I would say no . its a place to grow macro to export nutrients . and the flow is a lot slower . I would still use a small hob filter . but get more opinions then just mine .

Have you thought about a HOB skimmer? Probably more effective than a refugium, performs a more "needed" task. ..I run a aquamaxx hob skimmer on my 34 gallon AND an aquaclear with floss and some kind of chemical media not only for a little more filtration but also more water movement.

Here's another lol. A fuge on a 20 is useless IMO as you will be limited to the size fuge you can run as a hang on unit.

well i was looking at doing a sump/refugium type mix. running 2 pumps, one bringing water to the sump and one bringing the water to the DT, since its not a drilled tank. But by doing that I would think that I wouldnt need a filter anymore.

How are you going to do a "sump" on an undrilled tank? Do some research on skimmers.

Yep, now you have confused me lol.

A sump would be a good option, but only need an overflow and one return pump. Can also look into a gl*******s kit and nix the hang on overflow. I run a eshopps overflow on my wifes 20g shrimp fuge that dumps into her 30g frag tank that then dumps to a 20g sump. The hang on overflow kit has been rock solid for me for over two years running.

wouldn't it be size relevant small tank small cpr hob should be less nutrients to remove . not sure I follow the useless statement. on my 65g I have a 20g sump and a large cpr hob fuge. do you consider that to be useless as well. don't mean to hijak thread just looking for some clarity . I can always learn something new.

Well im officially lost now, so ill just stick with the bad setup I have now until I can get 500 bucks together and get the right setup, Sorry for making everyone confused.

Ran a small fuge on my biocube, and just couldn't keep up with the nutrients. Added a sump to the biocube and all was better as I was then skimming, running sock, biopellets, gfo, etc etc. Again, just opinions.

what he is saying sump is good but you don't run one with two pumps . you get a overflow box that hangs on back of tank . it is started with a syphon pulling water up a tube into the box and down a drain tube to the sump . in the sump you need a return pump to push the water back up to the main tank. hope that helps

Thanks mtc1966 now it all makes sense. So i can use my 20gal then get an overflow box and from the overflow box to the sump then return to the DT

okay. the jury is still out for me on mine I have a good skimmer in my sump and cant seem to grow cheato in the cpr . but what the heck it is extra water in the system.
