Hang on Skimmers

Depending on how long you have to wait, ATB should have one out for the new year. It will be part of the 'cone skimmer' line, but 350-400lph and HOB. It should kick some tail for the 20-75g HOB crowd.

Unfortunately they will pry want a premium around 500bux. You can get the bermuda rogue wave to do around 700-900lph air for 250+ a mag 5-7, so 300-320bux. I find that hard to compete with at the moment. But i'm looking forward to see what the atb shows.

I forgot that... one of the original design goals was to appeal to the more budget oriented group which normally goes for HOB, and try to get it under $300. As for if the exchange rate allows for that... who knows.

Thats the best news ever hahn Those will be great.

Yeah, it should be cool, I contributed on it in a big way, so I know what it should be like, and like the 'wetworx nano skimmers' over at nano-reef.com, the ease of fabrication should keep costs down. One feature was to make the pump, bubble plate, and cone 100% removable for cleaning w/o having to drain or remove the primary HOB chamber, so very convenient as well, because I know first hand that trying to clean a skimmer by removing it from the backside of a tank between it and the wall is a complicated chore.

Thats all I really want to say here. ATB has their own forum now, so just look for details there. But in general, I think its cool because I think its a market segment that is overlooked by most makers.

Within the next month or so... as quick as possible. Look in the ATB sponsor forum for updates.

Yes, the goal was to have as many micro-bubbles as possible released back into the tank ;)

Finally read this long and very interesting discussion-as well as many others- and am am more confused than ever...Done lots of research and the new Berlin turbo hot is still under consderation. $160.00 with pump at That Pet Place while I see it for $252.00 elsewhere. Can it really be that bad?? Noticed scummy pics from an older-they claim 50% less efficient than the turbo-model.

okay, you guys and gals really know your skimmers.

Here is my question.

What is the best (best meaning disregarding price) skimmer I could get for a 150 gallon Tenecor Simplicity?

Waterssreta,

There is no easy answer, the skys the limit on cost, and every high-end brand has its fans. For example, Bubble King skimmers can cost a few thousand.

Generally HOB skimmers are not considered as efficient as in-sump or external sump skimmers so that is a major consideration. So consider installing a sump first. There are several good skimmers for that size tank -- but seems off topic here ...

... I guess the related question is what's the best HOB skimmer out there today without respect to price. Even there, I doubt there is any easy answer.

I can get decent production out of my CSS125 but have to run it almost overflowing. Don't use this skimmer without a means to deal with overflows.

i have used successfully prizm and a prizm pro and tanks is doing awesome, and on my 125 i use a remora and a remora pro. The 125 gallon tank is doing awesome and so are skimmers the only thing that helped those skimmers or bigger pumps on each, i use a rio 2500 on remora pro and the rio 1400 on remora but thinking of adding a bigger one yet. As far as prizm pro this thing is huge for a hang on skimmer and i can pull out just as much as any other skimmer but see what some people don't think about is your live rock and live sand are natural filters, skimmer help get out crap from fishies and i lightly stock my tanks with fish i mostly do corals. If i was going to do a fish only tank or a heavy stocked reef tank i would definitely suggest sump with a good skimmer like an octopus skimmer, for the price you get a better skimmer than overpriced ATB skimmers.

D french your argument is like swiss cheese, Full of holes.

many people run skimmerless tanks, that is not the point of the thread......

The ATB is going to be priced with all the rest of the competition Remoras and prizms are not good skimmers, the pumps you are using are inneficent , add tons of heat, and cost much more $ to run,

My deltec runs 7W and would smoke your remora pro.

Its funny how most people have no idea that there are 800 dollar Bubble kings...

WaterssretaW Wait for the ATB or go for the deltec MCE 600

Rogue no brainer

Have you used it with a 150g setup? what pump did you run?

Best HOB skimmer I ever used was the turbofloater multi and I still use it on my 55 that being said I would not use it on anything bigger then a 90 with lightly stocked fish.

My personal recomendation on a 150 is put in a calfo style overflow and get a sump so that you are able to purchase an appropriate sized skimmer. I myself fought the sump thing for years afraid of floods and overflows and all the horror stories you read about hear on RC. After a year of no accidents that were not my fault. I have become a drill the hole and plumb it maniac and would not have it any other way.

Sure, i would also recommend a sump and a real skimmer. For hot, you could get away with two rogue's or two mce600's. For a 150g tank i just don't know if there is any hot skimmer out there. My rogue's pushed to the limit as is right now and i have to leave it wide open. Yea its pulling 6-9cups of fairly dark tank skimmate out of my 125g daily but it will pry = to one to two cups a day of very dark dry skimmate daily. But i don't know if its enough for a 150g tank. My trates have been zero for a very long time, but i contribute that to my large fuge. Not just my skimmer. I think a mag 7 on the rogue may be to much, I won't know until i try. I do think the mag 5 will be the best bang for your buck with it. The mag 3 does 16-17scfh, so the mag 5 will most likely do 20-30 and it won't be to much for the skimmer to handle. You will be able to adjust dry from wet. The only way i can skim really dry is if i throttle down the flow.
