Hanna ALK checker

I have been using Hanna checker for about 2 years and always found it pretty reliable when spot checking. But after reading Rovster's posts regarding bad reagent I started testing mine against other batches of Hanna reagent and also tested against other manufacturer's test kits. Some reagent batches are right on...others are not. I am dialing in my consumption so I have been testing A LOT...testing the same time every day.etc...so I believe the tests to be very accurate. I just opened a new batch last night and I always test it against the old reagent before it is all gone. Batch # 5441 tested 179 ppm... batch # 5583 tested 154 ppm. I repeated the tests and got the same results.

Thanks for sharing. Armando had this same issue. It seems the spread is about 20-25PPM. The kicker is the results are not erratic, they are very consistent.

But youve also discovered that Lot# 5441 was a culprit did you not?

I think that was it, whatever it was there are a couple others in the "other site" reporting problems with that particular batch and Hanna told me they've had calls about that batch in particular.

Picked up some more reagent yesterday I'm going to do a few more tests to make sure sure but it appears the 5541 was bad lot. Hanna responded right away asking me to confirm bad lot number.

This morning I checked it against 2 other batches and it appears Lot # 5541 is the bad batch. Tested high by 19 ppm. Bottle not expired....opened less than 30 days.

Lot # 5489 tested the same as 5583 ( within 1 ppm). and the 161 ppm is also consistent with my normal parameters.

This info was forwarded to Pete at Hanna.

Well, the problem we are seeing is not that it tests high, but that it tests low. You may want to check with another test kit, Salifert seems to be dependable, to see which one is correct.

I tested again last night and so far so good, it hasn't budged and agrees with my Salifert back-up. I can also tell by looking at my tank as I've noticed a lot of corals recentlyl perk up and are starting to really grow again. I feel my tank has been idling for months since my alk issues. Now that I've got things somewhat stabilized again, I notice a HUGE difference and a few corals that were receding stopped and some are actually showing some glow which is very exciting.

It was high. I test and log daily. I think it is called OCD LOL
This morning I tested it against 3 different batches of Hanna reagent purchased yesterday (160 to 161) and also Red Sea ALK Pro was very close. all tested the close to same except batch 5541.... Also My ALK has been basically the same for months at 160-163. On Tuesday batch 5541 tested @ 179-3 times back to back testing. Hanna said they would send me another bottle free, but never offered any explanation.

Another disappointment with Hanna reagents. I have spent the last few months dialing in my new dosers so I have been testing everyday....Got suspicious when PH was off...Out of 5 different reagent batches I had 60 ppm difference....I used Red Sea and API kits to verify and to figure out which batch was good ...# 5462 was good

I am tired of trading convenience for risk...no more Hanna checkers for me.

I gave up on mine 2 months ago. 3 bottles in a row did the same thing to me. I hate titration tests because of my colorblindness, but thankfully the salifert colorchange I can see. The red sea kit no way in hell!

I am also using Hanna all checker. What I experienced is hanna measures consistent when I checked with other manufacturers, then one day, using the same test liquid, my alk was significantly lower than normal and I adjusted for it being I'm using Hanna. Then a few weeks went by and all my corals started looking like crap. Couldn't figure out what was happening so i remembered about the big adjustment and decided to check with another manufacturer and the Hanna was way off. I adjusted alk based on the others and a few weeks later the corals started to return to normal.
