Hanna Nitrate checker freshwater, why wont it work for saltwater?

According to Hanna, it has to do with cadmium reduction the method in which they test for nitrate. I don't know the exact details, but there are variables that make it difficult to obtain an accurate test result with seawater. This is why they haven't developed a checker for it.

Hach seems to have gotten the method to work in saltwater

I suspect Hanna might be having trouble making the test simple and cheap.

It's true that saltwater interferes with the cadmium reduction method. There's an enzyme-based method that works with saltwater. A bit more expensive than the cadmium reduction method overall, but your results will be more accurate and dependable.

They also just came out with a photometer for getting digital results too, sort of like what the checker does, but again more accuracy:

Pretty neat!

Nice. It seems the test solution may have to be centrifuged before an absorption reading is taken.
