Harlequin Shrimp

They only feed on the tube feet of sea stars(star fish) so unless you have a steady flow of star fish or you can get them at a good price I would hold off on them.

what kind of starfish do they eat? and can i just buy a starfish cut it legs off and feed him that?

They will eat asterina starfish which under the right conditions will reproduce. So you could set up a tank dedicated to raising asterina for food for the shrimp.

Is your idea that the starfish will regenerate its legs and then you can keep feeding it the same starfish? I am not sure that that would work for all starfish or how many starfish you would need depending upon the rate of regeneration. Futhermore, were would you make the cut as to not mortally wound the starfish? I have seen them eating linckia, I am informed that they eat these as juveniles. The adults are known to eat asterias. Finally, I might look into if there are any conservation issues regarding linckia...I heard quite a few people are killing these.

I would stay away from the wild caught seastars. Too many die during shipping alone and never even make it to the LFS. Spurring more need and therefore more collection is not a good thing for something which has an already terrible survival rate.

I have a pair of harlequins and they are amazing. I feed them one large chocolate chip star every other week. They eat the whole thing together in no particular order or manner. Only problem is water quality during and after feeding, solved by a simple water change.

harlequin shrimp are very cool to look at but actually a terrible animal to have in the tank. the bioload from dying starfish is huge. They do eat chocolate chips. The manner in which they eat their prey is quite fascinating. Unfortunately they do not eat anything else.
