My LFS has a bunch of Feather Stars as usual. The guy has a few that he has had for several months and they're still going strong. However I've heard a lot of people say they could't keep them alive. ANyone have one of these for a while, what are all thier requirements?

whos the LFS with feather Stars? I had one once didnt last too long, hid alot and died within a couple weeks. I would like too know also. Possibly filter feeders with all those feathers or maybe just camo.

I have read that the mortality rate for these guys in an aquarium is huge. I don't think that anyone really knows what they eat (heck, we're not sure what fromia's and linkia's eat, and they're everywhere), so they will most likely starve to death in short order. Best left in the ocean.

The new Sea Dwellers has them. It was pretty cool, they were all curled up and hiding. He poured some sort of filter feeder food in the tank and they became animated! They Reminded me of tarantulas walking around.

Can you find out what the food was that it responded to?

I've had one for well over a year that is wasting away slowly. No idea why it survives. I tried another and it died in a month.

I had the same situation with the one I bought. I had it for about a month and it just died; however, the carnation corals Dendronepthya species are some of the most difficult filter feeding corals to keep. About a year ago I bought "Reef Chili" on ebay, you can buy at other online companies now and this coral has not only stayed alive but is doubled in size. I spot feed it 3 times a week using this. I mention this is becuase I've wanted to get another Feather Star and see if it would eat this food. My LFS hasn't had them for more than a year now.

I work at a LFS and picked up 2 of these buggers for my self 4 or 5 months ago, a pure green and a black with orange dots and they are both still kicking. The black has shrunk a wee bit, but seems to have stopped. They are living in a 29gal macro tank, and I add marine snow and reef bugs to the tank at night every other night. BUT I have seen at least 10 of these amazing creatures come threw the store and die within a couple of weeks. They are very, very hard to keep alive, and shipping seems to be an issue with them. Our Stars go between 19.99 and 29.99 depending on size and color. Hope this helps

I bought a feather star about 6mos ago. It seems to be doing great. I find him by the overflow, powerheads, or anywhere there is high flow and high light ( I have MH and T5 and he's always at the top of my tank). I feed my tank phyto and marine snow and he perks right up. It seems like he feeds alot at night because all of his arms will be raised up. Mine is dark green with lime green dots. Hope that helps
