Use a magnet holder to hold the frag plug in place 'till the cap encrusts onto the back wall then remove your magnet holder if you don't want it there.
You can just use gel and glue small pieces to the wall. It will grow horizontally on its own. The magnet plug will be easiest though but same principle.
Be cautious of placement because eventually it will shade anything around/under it. Caps imo are some of the fastest contenders for real estate in the tank so proper placement is key.
You should graft some together on the wall, that would be tight to have a two color monti scrolling up the back wall.
There is only a few ways I know of.. One is grafting 2 together and the other is where you get the pigment from one to grow into the other. The last one I have never done but have read about doing it. I think its in an advanced Aquarist article . I'm sure I have it saved somewhere I'll link it if I find it..
The first is pretty easy to do granted you have two that "get along". I did it a while ago with a standard green and red. Initially you have to test if they are compatible by placing a few small pieces next to each other to make sure they don't go to war. If you notice no slime and all is well you can glue them together. I found using a razor blade after they are cut to match them up as close as possible to each other so the cut ends are fully touching each other. Then glue them on a large frag disk or anything you can glue them onto evenly and wait.
Out of the few times I tried it really only one worked where they both grew evenly.. The others just had a mind of there own and grew at different places. I made the good one with almost identical size pieces like 2" x 1" of each.. I'll see if I can find some pictures of them and post it also. Got rid of them a few years ago when I ran out of space.
