having some weird issues with Reef Crystals salt....

Got this today,
Bob, I meant that I could look at a sample of any of the unused Reef Crystals you might have left. I want to try to duplicate the red film formation. If you want to include a sample of the red film I could look at it but I’m not sure I’ll be able to learn anything from it. Doubled-up Ziploc baggies work well for samples….I only need about one half to one cup of the salt.

Thank you,

Bob

So who has some they can send to Bob? Some salt mix that caused the red film.

I have been using RC for 1.5 years and it was only the last two buckets that have had undisolved white stuff. I don't like seeing that, but I did use all the salt and haven't seen any issues. I found a piece of chewed up white plastic in this last bucket as well. I have always seen a red film...I would like to know what this is.

I'm glad (but not for you) that someone else has gotten that waxy white stuff too. I did use up the mixed SW anyway--after leaving it to mix for a couple of days, the floating pieces were gone. It did leave a slimy residue & when I wiped it out with a paper towel, it was brownish-red. I have never had this happen before & only since I opened this new bucket.

Rob let me know when you send it and I'll alert Bob that it's on it's way to him.
I hope he can find out why the red film happened, I like answers.

i will post when i send it. we should also email him a picture of the red film.

fwiw, i just mixed a batch of Tropic Marin. I used the same bucket, heater, pump and thermometer and i had no red film.

Some of my observations after using Reef Crystals for over 1 year.

I have a brown crust that is on the inside of my 44gal brute mixing vessel. I had it on the inside of my 20gal glass tank that I used for mixing also. Only vinegar would dissolve it.

It did not appear all at once, but took months for it to form.

I only mix the salt long enough to become clear, & then turn off the pump till the day before I change the water. This maybe why the crust forms inside the vessel.

I have noticed a small film of scum that forms on top of the water approx 5 minutes after the mixing has begun. I take a very fine net & remove it. It maybe something in my water, maybe not. Keep in mind that it is a very small amount of scum & I just mixed 40gals of saltwater at SG of 1.026 - 1.027. If I don't remove the scum it just disappears in approx 10 minutes.

I have never had the water turn brown, & always looks clear after mixing.

It looks to me that the RC salt bucket lid is sealed with some type of glue paste. Maybe that is some of the contaminants that we see in the mixed water.

by the way, is anyone here a lawyer? wondering if i might need one after i show up at the post office with a zip lock bag full of a white powdery substance.....

I've been using RC salt for over a year now. I have never had a problem with any film until my last water change. It was a rust colored film at the top of the water surface on the garbage can. When I first read this post I thought maybe it was IL water. Now after seeing it myself I think it is also WI water or the salt batch. I just received my new bucket of RC and I'll see if this one does it too. Maybe someone should send Marineland a sample of the slime.

where is your source of water? i assume WI's water source is Lake Michigan which is where most, if not all, of Chicagoland's water comes from.

but without question it is not the water source. i am having zero issues with red slime since i switched back to tropic marin. i am very interested to see what they say about the salt i sent them.

Sounds like Calcium Carbonate

Well I got a new bucket of Reef Crystals salt. I cleaned out the garbage can and mixed up a new batch of saltwater. After a night the walls of my garbage can, my mixing pump, heater, and the cords are all covered with the yellow/red slime. Do you think the water is still good to use? I'm going to be calling the manufacturer about this to find out the problem.
