I'm not so sure about that. I have a paper somewhere that discusses briefly that in captivity, breeding can be increased by feeding flake food. In the wild, they only breed a few times a year, but they also consume bacteria, and apparently experiments were done with other food types, and more available food meant more breeding.
I've also heard of people breeding them with undergravel filters. I guess they hang out and breed in the dark areas. I doubt you'd be able to produce enough for a staple diet, but as a treat it sounds possible.
Unfortunately, i don't know of a good, inexpensive source anymore, so never tried.
