i woke up this morning to find that my favorite fish, a longnose hawk, had gone carpet surfing during the night.... and my cat had chomped his tail off. i have a feeling the cat startled him in the first place. i know these guys are jumpers... but he was doing so well! he found that little opening and leapt to his death. i can't help but feel guilty for leaving a gap he could get through.

ok, thanks for letting me vent. i miss the little guy! he must be in hawkfish heaven eating all the shrimp his little heart desires. hehe. but seriously.... argh! this was my first carpet surfer. :(

My first longnose hawkfish was my first carpet diver as well, I feel your pain:( They are an extremely extrordinary fish. Best of luck to you if/when you decided to get another fish.

Ps. Dont kick the cat too much, ;)

Oh they're jumpers all right. In wholesale, we'd have to cover every tank, otherwise when the lights turned on/off, or some one walked by, we'd have a bunch on the floor.

i thought he was an awesome fish... so much personality! i want to get another one but it's kind of weird i think... i don't normally get attached to fish. maybe i'll get a flame hawk. but they don't seem as personable. poor little guy :(

I also hope my diamond goby wont take a leap. I have about a 1inch opening where my return come in. So far so good.

Sorry about yours, it sucks for sure.

For a while, I was more concerned about my cat making a leap into my tank, and the girls coming home and finding a floating cat. :D

Thats the only drawback to my no canopy philosophy, no more gobies or anything that jumps.....found my diamond gobie four months after it jumped behind the tank while I was doing some spring cleaning. Figured the snails and hermits ate him.

Sorry about your carpet surfer. One of my favorite fish are the flasher wrasses. Same problem, great jumpers and they always seem to be able to find that small hole just above the return pipe to aim for.
