Hazy tank mystery solved

Hi everyone. I created a thread a while back on my always hazy 20 gallon reef tank. All my parameters were on the money. I asked the question if low mag levels would cause that. I asked all my lfs and on this forum. I mostly got answers like no and it shouldn't. I also got a lot of questions about sand, powerheads, carbon, salt mixing, over feeding and so on. I had no magnesium test kit. Once I got a test kit it showed levels in the 1100s. I started adding Dr.g's magnesium for about 5 day straight. The levels when up to 1300 and the tank has been crystal clear now for 2 weeks. I figured there might be a few frustrated reefers going through the same thing. Just putting my findings out there since no one was able to give me any real solution. Hope this helps out new reefs in the same situation.

Glad you were able to clarify the water in your tank. I could be mistaken but I'm not aware of any connection between magnesium levels and water clarity. Even the purveyor of the product you mentioned does not make this claim. Seems more likely that the water cleared due to your husbandry skills. Post hoc ergo propter hoc and all that jazz.

Low magnesium would cause the calcium to precipitate out of the water column. The heat generated from your pumps would cause a small amount of precipitation to continue over time causing a cloudy tank (or that would be my guess).
