i was told by rwhhunt told me his wennerae couldnt crack the emerald crabs shell. my G. smithii didnt crack the crabs shell but stole his right claw! the crab is freaked out!

Sweet Hutton, no wonder my emerald crabs hide all the time, after writing that last post, I went searching for my second emerald...and I cant seem to find it... thats not to say it has been killed because this 5 gal is PACKED Full of tonga rubble stacked up in a tight castle manner with plent-o-hiding places! BUT, I also cant say I've seen it for many weeks... So for all intensive purposes, it MAY have been killed.... The other one hides near the wennerae's burrow entrance and waits for unwanted food... I have read that it seems like the Smithii may be more aggressive than the wennerae, but i believe that in general each mantis has its own "personality" and personal tastes for meals and friends....

i have noticed that. whne my smithii dies of old age i may get a wennerae. i like the smaller mantis better than the peacocks. first mantis every one wants is a peacock. my smithii only killed him because the crab was dumb enough to walk over to the burrow and stand over it. one shot to the underside killed him. and i am sure that your wennerae is just as mean as a smithii. if the wennerae got a chanse to get to the emeralds belly. then he had a huge dinner!

My P. Ciliata just took out a molly... happened when I turned my head to so I missed it. Next time Ill have to be ready to get it on video. added pic...

my friend had a green ciliata, and took 15fps video with his digital camera (320x480 i think), well, we slowed it down, and the strike was completed between frames, which means it was like less than a tenth of a second!

Mantis strike IS the fastest animal on earth.

Seems a bit mean to give him crabs/fish though? Why not cockles/mussles? In the wild the fish/crabs COULD have a chance of escaping, in your closed tanks, no chance.

I dont lose sleep over it so it doesnt bother me. In the wild are fish ept in glass boxes? In the wild the fish can swim free but they cant choose were to go in an aquarium. Plus i think the mantis should get live food. ive tried clams from safe way, he wont eat them because they dont move. That is like saying it is mean to feed baby brine shrimp to one of your sea horses.

I just got my spearer, whats the cheapest best fish to feed them?

It's 4", so i'm sure it can grab something big.

I wish they had feeder fish in saltwater like Freshwater..

My buddy fed his ciliata a molly once or twice, it also ate ghost shrimp, and frozen krill, & silversides...
