My son and I re going to Cozumel in April. My son is 16 and were both cert. but it been a 1.5yrs since we have been in the water. Does anyone have any recommendations of dive sites (45 to 50 feet max). Or a recommendation on reputable dive shops or guides?

I don't remember which company we used when my wife and I were in Playa Del Carmen on our honeymoon. We went to Cozumel for a dive excursion, but our travel agent/company arranged everything.

If has been a while, most resorts offer refresher courses in their pool. If you want and are on the main land (Palya Del Carmen) the resort "The Royal" has an actual dive pool and can give you a good refresher right there on sight instead of being "embarrassed" by dragging SCUBA gear into a resort pool. :)

I went with Scuba Club, but not sure if they book divers that aren't staying there. As for dive sites, they have so many that are amazing. If you are diving for a few days, the dive master can figure out what type of places you want to go to and choose depending on difficulty level as well as water conditions during that time. My favorites though are Palancar Caves for a deeper dive with great formations and lots of life. Paradise reef is a good shallow dive and a great night dive.

Heading for Cuz in just under 2 weeks. We are planning on doing six days of boat dives and a few shore dives as well. Most dive shops can accommodate your diving needs. Usually the first dive is a deep dive and then followed by a shallow dive. Just make sure the DM knows your skills, so that he/she can keep an eye on you.

or just dive dives that FIT your skills and plan the dive and dive the plan and it wont matter if a DM is with yall or not. Iv seen some pretty bad DMs out there...why rely on him/her to keep you safe. IMO

Have FUN diving!!

Cheers!

I loved the diving in Coz, most of the dives I went on were 80 foot plus for the first dive and then a 40 to 50 ft after that. My favourite sites for the shallower dives were Tormentos and Tunich. I did a lot of shore diving and saw some awesome stuff just shore diving, the vis was really good on most days. We stayed at the Coral Princess (north of town) and the shore diving there is some of the best in Coz but the boat rides are longer from north of town.
I watched quite a few people do check out dives and refresher dives just doing a shore dive from the hotel, seemed to work out well. Have fun

Trip advisor and some of the scuba review sites have feedback on most of the outfits in Cozumel. We just got back from Cozumel and had great dives everyday. Most of the shops have pretty good reviews, but there were a few with not so kind words.
