Healing a large Toadstool Coral - need advice.

Hi, well this is my very first post and I am so impressed with the knowledge transfer in this forum and hope to use it as a valuable tool. I have a 95 wave tank running 2 150w Metal Halides (10,000k), 1 40w Actinic blue, 1 40w Daylight Coral life bulbs. The tank is set up as a mini reef (no fish yet, only 3 shrimps).

4 days ago, I put a large (and very expensive) toadstool leather coral into the tank. I have noticed the coral has developed two yellow/brown patches in the center of it about the size of a nickle. The size represents approx. 10% of the surface area. It looks like it was damaged there, but nothing hit or touched that spot that I know of. Will this heal on its own? Is there something I should be doing to help get rid of this?

My water quality is excellent, no nitrates, nitrites, ammonia. Ph = 8.3, SG = within normal range.

Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to give as much info as possible. Thank you.

First I would just make sure you have good flow on those areas of the coral and see what happens. If it seems to get worse you may have to cut the affected areas off the coral. They are extremely hardy so just keep an eye on it.

One thing I do is to blow the area off with a turkey baster. Keep a close eye on the area. I had one that developed several holes in it. I ended up dipping it twice in an iodine dip three days apart. It did wonders for the coral and the holes finally healed. Good luck.
