with my custom canopy (6" high) i want to use a 70 or 150 watt halide along with my current 130 watts of pc and 168 led's of supplementation. there is 2 - 3" cooling fans installed in the hood. i have a partial glass top over the tank to prevent to much evaporation even though i have auto top off. could i see a lot of heat issues with these halides about 3" from the water surface? current temp swing is around 1 degree on this 20 gallon tank...

it really depends on how well the fans vent the canopy, i ran a 400w MH on a 29g system for several yrs without a chiller and kept a mid to upper 80s temp, overall the temp will likely increase but you should still be able to keep it consistant.

I have two 175w halides and 2 96w PC's over a 45g tall and have to run a fan across the water until the a/c in the house is turned on. Without the fan or a/c on temps spiked into the mid 90's once and cooked some corals. A single box fan blowing between the lights and the water kept it at 82*. Still a little warm but I refuse to get a chiller.
