Will a 250 watt MH get hot enough to plywood to cause a fire? My guess is yes, if so how can I set my PFO mini pendant up without burning down the house. The current top is flat and made of plastic. I am not a woodworker so the best I can do is a flat sheet of plywood stained or perhaps acrylic and I really do not want an open top with the pendant hanging from the ceiling.

Are you looking at a retro or a pendent? Is this going into a canopy or are you placing it on top of the tank?

It is a pendant that I would like to place on top of my tank which currently has a plastic top with a door and two clear spots for the normal flourescent lights that came with the tank.

If it's the hood I'm thinking of (traditional Flip up all-in-one plastic hood http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3785&Ntt=hood&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&pc=1&N=0&Nty=1 ), you can not use it with a MH. A glass top is what you should be running, or egg crate would work also, but you will still need to hang the pendent. Water splash and heat are issues with MH's.
