Heater and controller question

I have a Won ProHeatII that went out. The temperature reading on the read out said 120-140 therefore the heater will never comes on. This is the second heater I had that did this. I also have a dual temp controller.

I want to know if I can just cut the heating rod from the heater, put a plug on it and connect to the controller.

Yep. I did exactly this with one of my ProHeats that went out. It's been working like this in my salt mixing container for about a year now with no problems.
