Heater Explosion ?

I just bought a new Visi-Therm 300w heater two weeks ago. It literally exploded about two inches below the on light, that shows it is heating. It pays to have a grounding rod in the sump. Can someone maybe explain why this would happen? It was completely submurged all but the top inch or so. All I can think of was the bubble diffuser on my protein skimmer was right above it and air bubbles where getting down on the heater. Might this have caused this? I now have heart trouble....LOL Scared the S**T out of me and my wife!!!, Blew the breaker I was running around the house like a chicken with my head cut off, and all my wife could do is cuss me saying " I am missing my show on TV for you overloading the electic." This has been running this way for two years and never have overloaded the electic. (My wife has her priorities in the wrong place.)LOL In the long run everthing is A-OK.

Sorry to hear that, hopefully all the livestock is ok. I still run a glass heater and leaning towards getting a titanium. Don't know why it fragged, it is glass though.

Charlie what brand do you suggest then? Is the Visi-steath any good? I had been running this same brand with no problems. I was using the old one in my RO/DI top off barrel. So it does not have a heater in it now. I want to put this glass one back in there. And get a GOOD one for my display. And yes everthing is all right as far as the fish go. I did'nt even have a temp fluc.
Thanks,
John

i would go with any titanium heater over glass anyday!

alto i haven had to use a heater in awhile so i cant really reccomend any brand over the other but....
thin glass and heat and water dont mix very well

Ok, Thanks a million. I have to use a heater my wife will not raise the house temp over 72 degress. So, during the day when the halide is on, I have to run fans, and at night there has to be heat. No happy medium around this house. LOL
Again Thanks,
John

The only glass heaters I will use are the Ebo-Jagers. You'd probably break a titanium heater before one of them. However, if you do go titanium, as I say to everyone, you have to put it on a controller. The build in temp controllers on the titanium heaters are notorious for failing. My titanium heater (an expensive Won Brothers) had its controller fail the only time I tried to use it without a separate controller.

Ok thanks Dugg and Tim. I will be shopping today!(after all it is the Christmas season is'nt it?)

There are other options - I use Visi-Therm Stealth heaters which are totally plastic on the outside, virtually unbreakable.... (in my experience)
