Heater for 29g biocube

I recently put a 50 watt heater in my 29 biocube and set it at 75 degrees. I noticed the temp running over 80. I don't want it to be that high. The reason I put this one in is because the other one wasn't even working so I was wondering if I even needed a heater. I was just wanting to keep temp at a constant during the night. My house is kind of chilly. I have a maxijet 1200 so that keeps things warm anyway. Any suggestions on heat settings or anything for that matter?

Whatever temperature the heater is set for is the minimum your temp will get. The tank may be warmer due to lights, pump, etc. 80F is fine.

I had the temp set to 75 but it was way hotter than that. Is it possible that it heats up in the first chamber and then heats up going through the second and third?

You're going to have to keep adjusting the heater a little at a time and keep a close eye on the temperature. Check every hour or every half hour and write down the temp and the setting on the dial. The key is to make small adjustments. Also note what other equipment is running.

you sure it's an accurate heater? Once in awhile a bad one can get into the the bunch. What brand is it? What thermometer are you using? I had a little coral life that ran about 10 degrees low! Scary...

I will definitely try that out. I need to see what brand it is. I figured the settings could be off a little but 10 degrees is scary. I will keep that in mind

Just trying to throw ideas out there for you to look into :)

ps. I have a friend that calls 84 the dead zone. You're still a ways from it.

That's what I was afraid of. I turned the heater off two days ago and I checked the temp just prior to the lights going off and it was reading around 84. I also have just one of those glass tube thermometer so that could be off. I am just gonna go buy a digital to be sure. With the lights off it runs about 81-82

I have looked on nanotuners but I don't have the money for too many upgrades like that. I have just been keeping things basic for now. I'm still a newbie

I had an issue with my heater when I first got the biocube recently... I noticed that as the water level evaporated it exposed the top of the heater to air and I believe that may have been the reason it was overheating. I moved it in to the main tank and since then have not had an issue. GL ;)

I unplugged the heater and directed a fan on it yesterday and it cooled down. I will check that the heater is submerged to the level it's supposed to and start from scratch. Hopefully that is all the problem was.

I am having a similar issue, I recently setup a 29G biocube and put in a Hydor Theo heater I had and set it for 76 and my temp was around 81-82. This was with only the return pump on and no light. I am currently looking for a new heater.

Any opinions about the JBJ TrueTemp system? Any other recommended heaters?

I usually run around 80. I figured that the maxijet 1200 would do that. I was told 80 was okay but just that one day after putting a new heater in it went way up.
