Heater help for a NC12DX

Wondering what watt heater everyone uses. I currently have a 50W but thinking of putting a 75W in that I have lying around. The reason.....the room temp in my house fluctuates a lot. when I go to work I turn down the heat, when I get home, the tank has gone from 77 degrees to about 74. I feel that the heater is not keeping up with the change in room temp. Any suggestions, thoughts or comments? I'm concerned that the 75W will be a little to much. Also, I could change out the 75W for a 50W when the weather starts to warm up here in the North East!

i have a 25 watt in my 12 gal ap. and it does just fine keepin the temp in my tank at 80 degrees. room temp in my house is usuallly around 70 degrees

It's possible that the lack of livestock is affecting my temp. I currently only have sand and water in the tank. Once the LR comes in it will displace a lot of water and hopefully give me a more consistent temp.
