Hey guys stupid question? I took out the heater out of my sump while still on and put it on a towel and I went to put it back in the water and it smoked. Then when i placed my hand in the sump and there was a shock! Do u think I need a new heater??? New guy mistake.....Thanks

Sounds like you need a new one.
Still better than what I did. I drained my sump, left the heater on, then filled the sup up and BOOM. My heater exploded.
Lesson learned, LOL.

Been there , done that..... mine shattered. If you got shocked yours is broke too. I would not recommend putting it into the water as it will introduce voltage into your inhabitants ultimately killing them. To be safe replace it- and save yourself some anguish.
I learned many years ago to unplug the heater and let it cool down before removing it. Hope this helps! TinMan

I accidentally dropped mine into a bucket of water, got shocked when I took it out, forgot to unplug it because I was freaking out because I got shocked, dropped it on the ground, melted an extension cord, and then I broke it on the concrete. lol Heaters are mean, and Im a horrible klutz lol :spin1:

now that i need to get another heater what kind is good how many watts do i need my old one was 300w....also i got a digital meter today and it says tank is 83.6 thats seems really hot knock on wood have not lost any fish at all..BTW i have 120g Thanks

The 300w will work fine in a 120G, since you live in Fla. it will work less and last a bit longer. Also, I have found that the titainium heaters are a little harder to "bonehead up" than glass- but I have a chiller to control mine and I'm not positive, but you might have to purchase a separate controller for it. I use the Finnex TH-300, and have been happy with it's performance for going on two years now.
As for the temperature, it's borderline. Try to cool the surface of the water with a small fan if a chiller is not an option. TinMan

i think this is the one i got. the controller is green. has a light indicating it's working and another indicating it's heating.

I checked this out and I would definatly not suggest it. First off, look at the quality, not what color it is, and look at how much they want to ship it- insanity! There is NO NAME given in the description, I would never BLINDLY buy something when it comes to ANYTHING! Do some research before you stick something into your tank because you are looking for function in reefkeeping not PRICE and COLOR.................TinMan
