Heater?

I believe the general rule of thumb is about 5 watts per gallon. I am a big fan of Jäger heaters.

A common trick is to get 2 underpowered heaters. That way if one gets stuck on (common problem with all heaters I believe) it won't have the power necessary to cook your tank, or at least not very quickly. I also recommend Jager heaters. They say they aren't submersible, but they are.

I recommend Visi-Therm Stealth heaters. Plastic cover makes them shatter-proof. They turn off automatically when removed from the water. My 200 watt Stealth heater is sufficient for a 60 gallon display tank & 29 gallon sump (with about 12 gallons of water). The temperature gauge is accurate.
