I want to get a new heater for my 120 gallon tank. the one i have now is crap and wanted to see what is the most trusted heater people use or recommend?

EboJager
Visitherm Stealth

I tend to lean towards the Stealths because they are nearly impossible to crack.

All of my heaters are plugged into a controller though. I don't trust any heater on the market without a secondary control on it. (Full tank Controller, Ranco, etc.)

Eheim jagers (please do not confuse them with jebos) are great, I have been running them for years.

Visitherm Stealth - I will never use marineland heaters again after using the Stealth Pro heaters. I've tried all the different sizes they had and they all had issues. I had a box full of them and lucky me they were recalled a few months back, I got close to $400 back (that's how many I tried). The Visitherm Stealth might be better than their older heaters but....

+1 on using an external controller to regulate the temp.

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. I think i will be staying away from marineland because that is the heater i have now. The thermostat is malfunctioning so i had to turn it all the way down and raise it slowly to find the right temp. I do like the ViaAqua one that TruespeedEM1 posted a link to. does anyone have any experience with them? the reviews looked good but i would rather hear it from people on here that use them. more suggestions will be appriciated. Thanks again

I've been happy with my Finnex, though reviews seem to be mixed online. Had mine for a year with no issues. Even the suction cups have held up. I bought my cousin one for Christmas last year and he hasn't had any problems either.

I also like how it looks.

I gave my old 55 setup to my mom who still uses this heater. It works very well and keeps the temperature constant at all times. I really like it and the dial is easy to set. never had any problems with it at all!

OK, so this weekend was interesting to say the least, but i did decide to get a new heater. Saturday was fine i went to ocean gallery and got the Finnex titanium heater and went to Red Lobster with the girlfriend for endless shrimp dealy they have going on. After that everything went down hill. About an hour after i got home stomach started hurting. ended up throwing up all night. guess i got some bad shrimp....but thats not the worst part. so on sunday when i could finally get out of bed i came downstairs to check out the tank and saw that the corals were closed and didn't look good. looked at the temp and it was freakin 85!!!! so i looked at the heater and it had the light that indicated that it was off. so i unplug it throw a fan on it and after a couple hours it was back down to about 75 so i plug the heater back in set it for 78 and keep checking it every so often. sure enough it creeps back up to 80... unplug and bring back to ocean gallery because it is obviously staying on and not turning off. they exchange it with not problem (Thanks Brian at ocean gallery). I hook up the 2nd finnex heater and so far it is keeping a constant temp of 77 and looks like this one is good. I really like the controller on the heater and that the temp prob is separate from the heater also that it doubles as a temp gauge itself.

Here is the heater I decided to go with

As mentioned above redundancy is key, dual control is a good idea (hooking it up to a controller) and having multiple heaters just in case one goes down and you don''t know it. As far as type goes I don't use anything but titanium heaters after my second glass tube broke and most of mine are ViaAqua.
