Heavy Green Algae, please help!

I've acquired an established 40 gallon reef tank. It was beautiful for a few weeks and now it's a nightmare! There is heavy Green Algae and a coating of red Algae over the coral. I'm completely new to this. What should I do first?

Well, we need more info! And welcome to RC by the way!

40 gallon tank - what's your filtration, lighting, etc setup? What have you got in the tank? Have you tested the water and if so, what were the results? Are you using RO/DI water and doing water changes?

That will help people help you to problem solve.

@OrQidz I have a Fluval 305 filter, I have a clown fish, large star fish & another small fish, snail. I haven't tested the water but I will! So much to learn!!
