I recently found a specimen that is just gorgeous at a local FS. Before I ever purchase anything in this hobby I need to know how to care for it. The good, the bad, and the ugly points are also appreciated.

My basic understanding of this coral is medium to low flow with a wide girth around where it lays in the sandbed to avoid sweeper tenticles from entanglement with the SPS. They enjoy meaty foods and high to medium light.

I also need to know if I can treat these corals for 15 min in TMPCC. Everything in my tank has been carefully quarantened and treated with TMPCC before addition to the tank to keep some of the common nasty bugs out.

color? in my area, only the ones that are green with yellow tips ever survive. i don't really know why. i think you would be okay to treat for 15 minutes in tmpcc. i have yet to find some heliofungias in my area that survive past the first two weeks other than the ones in the show tank at one of my favorites. i think that is a BIG thing to look for at your LFS. make sure the coral has been there for a couple weeks before you slap down some money for it.

Thanks for the info. I actually asked if they would hold it for a week longer to answer that question. They told me no so I'll be back next weekend and if they still look healthy pick one up then. So maintaining isn't difficult? It's whether they survived from the undo stress of shipping.

maintaing isn't too hard. once its settled into your system, they are as hard to kill as any other plate coral (says the guy with 2 in his display tank for over a year now). you should probably ask more about heliofungias though to someone with more experience with them, as i still need to find one that will survive that is for sale :p .

Yeah I'm going to wait it out and see if they come down with any infections before purchasing. Just something that would be unique that doesn't cost an arm and a leg... like duncans or acans both with great survival records...

I picked up a heliofungia about a month ago and its doing great until I did a water change. The plate closed up for 3 days and I almost thought it was dead until I noticed my emerald picking at it. I put the crab in qt and the next day the plate looked better like this

The plate looked much better in my tank than at the store. The only thing I would change is they like medium to high flow.
