Hey all,

I am just starting to get back into reefkeeping after a couple of years and had a few questions.

Where is the best place to get local supplies? I have heard that 6th ave in SF is good but who wants to drive that far these days.

Second what are the ways to get into your club. Not sure if my work sched will fit but it seems like a great way to learn more about the ins and outs of reefkeeping.

Lastly where is the best place to get live rock as that is the next phase of starting up for me.

I posted in the newbie section as an introduction so I won't bother you with it here.

Thanks for any info and this seems like a great place to learn and avoid some of the problems I had before.

Craig.

Welcome back to the hobby Craig,
There are two local places to get most of what you need for reef keeping. In cotati Northbay Aquatics and in Santa Rosa Ceasars Tropical Fish. Both have a good selection fish, coral and equipment. If your looking to save a bit of money check out a few places online. Liveaquaria.com have good deals on live rock. You can also check in this forum for used equipment and sometimes coral.
As far as joining our club, you need to attend meetings regularly. The location changes from place to place. This month I will be hosting the meeting along with a pool party/BBQ. You are welcome to attend. Please see August 2nd meeting RSVP thread.
Good luck.

6th Ave. is not a good place for fish or corals, but they do have a good price on live rock and salt. I think its about 4-5 bucks a lbs. and you can pick through it. Like nutty said, North Bay Aquatics is good and Ceasars in Santa Rosa. To join the club, show up to meetings and your in. This forum has updates on what the club is up to. Welcome!

Thanks guys for the welcome and the info. I will check my work schedule and see about making it to the meeting.

Sulcata I am definately interested! I need to get a pump tomorrow and then test the whole thing for leaks but I would be ready after that. How many pounds do you have as I need about 40.

Thanks, Craig.

I could hook you up with 40. I have some aptaisia on it but not much. I would suggest scrubbing all the rock real good and maybe even keep it in the dark for about a week. It's up to you. That method is a real good way to make sure any unwanted pests don't make it.

Sulcata,

How should I keep it in the dark?

Tank without lights?(which I was planning on doing for a couple of weeks.)

Rubbermaid bucket with a powerhead and lid?

Let me know and I will prepare. Consider it sold.

I work late on weekends and have Tuesday, through Thursday off next week. Let me know what works best I live in East Petaluma so it is an easy drive to Windsor.

Thanks, Craig.

The best way i have found is a rubbermaid with a power head and heater. i have a rubbermaid you can use if you need one.

Clay,

Thanks but my wife is the queen of Rubbermaids. Do I put the lid on it or not. Checked out your tank build thread and I saw the Rubbermaid.

Craig.

Clay's got it right. I just pulled all the rock out and put it in a 40 gallon drum with a heater and a pwerhead. It will be ready when you are. Here is my cell. 478-9268. call me next week.

Thanks Sulcata. I will call you on Monday p.m. to see what and when works better for you.

Got the pump but Ceasers was out of 3/4" tubing. Oh well a waiting game for now.

Craig.

Thanks I will go there next week. Do they sell vinyl to Pvc adapters to ?

just use a threaded barb fitting, that screws into a pvc female adapter. And yes they do sell both of these, but they are in two different places of the store.

Thanks. Don't know if I have ever seen a threaded barb fitting but I am guessing it is a fitting that keeps the tubing in place. I think the pump itself came with one but I need more.

What do you guys do for a return line?
Go strait in and shoot towards the front, shoot it behind rock towards the overflow or along the side? Just wondering before I put it together...

Thanks.
