My name is Karl. I am 27 years old and originally from Eureka, California. I work in ship maintenance. I'm new to the hobby. I've never been interested in reefs before. But recently we were vacationing at a friend's place and I saw a large tan with reefs and different fish, from small to large, the largest one was about the size of my palm. And I was eager to have at least one like it at home. Although he spent a lot of money on his. In general, I am a complete zero in this, so I am glad to be in your circle. This is a great forum and very informative. I'd be grateful for any tips for a good start.

Welcome
Look for a used system or at least tank and stand. Some of the deals recently have been mind blowing. For large fish you need a large tank. For us mere mortals, that means a 150 gallon or larger. A large tank among purists is 500 gallons or more. I have 1 fish the size of my hand with spread fingers in a 240 gallon with others slightly smaller.

Welcome! As mentioned, used will generally save you a ton of money. Personally, the only used tanks I’d stay away from is Red Sea but other brands should be pretty good to go. If it’s a tank that’s been sitting dry for a while, be sure to see if the silicone is drying out. If it’s a recent break down, there shouldn’t be any issues.
