hey all,

Well it's about time I quit lurking and start posting. Well mostly I have some questions and ths seems like the place to ask them

First off let me introduce myself. My name is Justin and I'm from Sioux City. Theres not much going on here as far as this hobby is concerned, but we do have a very small store that carries some things so it could be worse.

My tank at the moment is a 7 gallon Eclipse hex and it was something I set up about five months ago as a general saltwater fish only tank. Within about two weeks of it being set up I had visited the lfs and came home with about three pounds of live rock and it progressed from there, slowly.

Currently I have no fish in my tank, I had a clown for 3 1/2 months and he dissapeard suddenly about two weeks ago. I'm not sure what happened he was eating and acting fine before I went to work and when I got home he was gone. I had to fight an ammonia spike an spent hours looking for where he went. I found him wedged so deep in a rock I had to spend half an hour or so digging him out. I got the ammonia under control and so far managed to loose nothing else in the tank.

The only coral that I have in my tank is some brown zoo's that were on some of the LR and a green hammer coral. There is one brittle star and an urchin some hermits and snails.

I also have a empty 125 sitting not but ten feet from my little nano that will in time become my reef tank, but that's going to be a slower process and I'm looking at replacing the tank with a 150 reef ready tank before I start setting it up. I would use the 125, but I'm almost positive it has had copper used in it before, also the bottom plastic brace is cracked and i'm not sure I want to risk it. The tank held water for two years cracked like it is and never had a problem. I'm wondering if you guys have any ideas if it would be ok to use or would you recommend getting a new tank?

welcome Justin, I agree not much up in the NW part of iowa for things but there are a few good places to go in sioux Falls if you don't mind the drive. i am only an hour north of you so any help you need let me know.

Now for the main reason I posted this thread. looking over my live rock a couple days ago I discovered this little guy, it looks like an anemone, but not an aptasia and I cannot figure out what it is. If you could even point me in a good direction that would be great

I know the picture is bad, but this thing is actually like 2mm across at the base(the red) the white dots are the tips of the tentacles and the tentacles themselves are clear and really hard to see. The tentacles extend up to about 5mm away from the base.

Sam, thanks for the offer I 'll let you know if I need anything and the same goes for me too i'm willing to help with what I can. It's nice to know that there is someone even somewhat nearby.

I have been to mini critters in Sioux Falls, but don't get the chance to get that way often. Have you been to Zeds in Sioux City? He seems to have healthy livestock and is willing to order what you want also. I was just curious of your opinion if you've been there.

Looks like a small LPS of some sort.

That'd be great if it was a LPS. It's in a spot where it gets very little light should I move it so it gets more light or just leave it?

If it looks happy, leave it. If you really feel it isn't getting any light just tip it a little.

To answer your question on the 125, it might be risky, but if you replace the silicon seals in the aquarium you should be perfectly fine. Replacing the silicon is as easy as taking the old out witha razor blade, squeezing a thin bead into each corner, and giving it a nice rounded seal with a finger.

It's certainly nice to have a drilled thank, though, as well.

Does your anemone-lps extend any further than that? I've had anemones that look much like that when contracted.

you can buy replacement plastic trim. i just got one for a 72 bow front. if you want to replace it . cuting old one off is hard but it beats the cost of a new tank. i got mine from the fish shack in manchester iowa. other stores may order them for you.thats what they did.

Thanks for all the help on the tank, I'm still trying to convince the wife to let me get a drilled tank, but if i can't convince her I'm glad to know that my tank is not a total loss and it can be saved.

This looks like a majono anemone. Could be or stay harmless for several years. If it starts to multiply watch out. They are as bad as aptasia.
