Hells Fire Anemone

I read a thread on here about someone being stung by one, from what I read it was one hell of an experience! As for them being reef safe... I have no idea...

Saw one at an LFS today, freaking unreal.

In general though, I would venture a guess that they are better left in the ocean. The rule of thumb I use is that if they are uncommon in people's tanks, there is a reason why.

One of my LFS's has one. It is in a reef tank and is ok there. the owner said he got stung by it once and said he learned why it was called "Hell's Fire".

Our LFS also had them for a long time, but I found no info on the web about it.
Ended by buying the tube anemone, and quite happy now :D

Would one of you try to find the real name for these from your LFS? I would like to check them out and the internet has no pics and no info at all.

Actinodendron anemone.

The one I saw looked like OranguTang's first pic. It looked more like a red colony of some encrusting/short branch soft coral than an anemone. I was talking to the owner and he said it looks completely different at night, it has a separate feeding polyp that comes out. Showed me a picture and it looked like an anemone coming out of that red pic above.

OranguTang, is that a specimen you own?

A place near me gets them from time to time. They are kinda cool looking but not worth the risk of stinging me eating my fish, IMO.
