Help! 50 or 100mm macro?

I finally ordered my Canon XSI from B&H Photo yesterday. I was going to get the camera, 100mm Canon macro lens, and a tripod. The only reason I didn't order everything online is because I wanted to get a recommendation on the tripod. I ended up getting a recommendation on the macro lens, and the salesperson guaranteed me that I would be happier with the Sigma 50mm macro than I would be with the Canon 100mm macro. I ended up taking his advice and now I'm having buyers remorse because everywhere I read, it seemed like the Canon 100mm was the obvious choice. My question is, should I wait to get the Sigma in and try it out (I have 2 weeks to return it), or should I change my order? I'm new to the SLR world, so I don't really know the big difference between the 2. Any advice or experience with either or both?

If you want to buy the Sigma then buy the Sigma. I personally have already driven the point home to buy the 100mm Macro. What is making you change your mind now? We already told you everything your saying. Every post you have ever made on these forums have been about the 100mm.

I have the 100mm macro, and it's awesome. I'd highly reocmmend it. I havent used the sigma 50mm, but I have used the canon 65mm and do prefer the 100mm. The main reason I like it for the tank is that I can't get as close to some of the subjects that are in the back of the tank. You may want to try the sigma if you have a return period, but you'll never know until you get your hands on the 100mm to compare.

I know, I know, you guys told me the 100mm all along... The salesperson was so determined to make me spend less money and get the 50mm, that I just ended up saying "okay". I'll try to switch my order... Thanks for the responses!

I'm a lurker, but have to stick my two cents in on this one.

I have the Sigma 50 macro. It's excellent but very limited in terms of aquarium photography and I rarely use it. From what I've read, you've been given sound advice in this process. Probably best to return the 50 and get the 100. You won't regret it.

Thanks again. I'm new to the SLR world, so until I get one in my hands, I won't know what the difference between a 50mm and 100mm actually means. The B&H sales guy really gave me the hard sell on the cheaper lens, so I felt pressured to take his advice. I should've realized the reefcentral camera guys know what takes better pics of aquarium coral than the B&H guy -- he might not even know what I'm really trying to do.

They probably have a huge stockpile of Sigma 50mm macros and the salesman was possibly offered an incentive to get rid of them. They can sell the Canon 100mm all day long, because that is what anyone who does their homework would likely want. If if you buy anything else its like a bonus sale.

Yep, with a 50mm you have much less working distance. Take away from that the size of your glass. The 100mm is much more useful for aquarium shots.
