He said he was burnt out(I think wife was making him get rig of it), he has been keeping tanks for years. He sold all the fish and coral, except 2, one clown fish and one blue fish, the name escapes me..somethig like dame. I talked to him for a while and I am picking up the tank this weekend. He said he has the tank set up for a few years and it was doing very well....he did mention that he dose not use a protein skimmer but everything else I would need is there.

killagoby, Those orange bio-balls, toss them in the trash. They are just a nitrate factory for a reef tank. What should I replace them with?

Dame = Damsel fish. :D
Burnt out sounds like a good excuse. I know if my wife was buggin' me about my tank long enough, I'd get burnt out too.
As for your orange bioballs, replace them with nothing at all. let the bacteria seed more densly on the rock and sand. Some recommend rubble rock, but I'm kinda steering away from that advice. Keeping no rubble will just cause the bacteria colonies on the sand and rock to build up more.

After reading, and reading and did I mention reading I have come to a conclusion…I need to read more, I need to do a hell of a lot more research. I am nowhere close to ready to try setting up a reef. I am still going to buy the tank it is to great of a deal to pass up. For now I will set it up as a cichlid tank. I am going to let the live rock dry out, I could sell it but I figure once I am ready I will have everything I need to get started. Papagimp is right, I should learn from the ground up.

If anyone lives near me and wants a 55g tank, just the tank no hood, filter or lights let me know, the tank is free but I live in the top floor of a loft and there are lots of stairs you have to come get it.

Same deal on a 75g (once it is empty of my cichlids)

I also have a 1970’s 120g tank. This is one of thoes tanks with a slate bottom and stainless steel trim, this tank it drilled for overflow and weighs A LOT ****a note on this tank, it leaks I have tried to reseal it but it still leaks and not out of the bulkheads.

All these tanks are free but you have to bring someone to help you carry them down….please email me at loftyguy1240@gmail.com if you’re interested
